“Mary E. Kirwan Catholic Education Scholarship Awarded”

The inaugural “Mary E. Kirwan Catholic Education Scholarship” was awarded to 7th grader Aly Fuqua at St. John the Baptist School in Kenmore.  The scholarship was established to honor Mary Kirwan in recognition her leadership in establishing the school’s Scramble Golf Tournament and Scholarship dinner which has raised over $150,000 since its inception.

1The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a deserving student distinguished him/herself with service to the community and academic performance.  The faculty nominated candidates from the 6th and 7th grades who emulated the qualities consistent with Kirwan’s legacy and character—leadership, service, and a pursuit of excellence.  In addition to the written recommendations of the faculty, the candidates then wrote an essay and were each interviewed by a selection committee.  Michelle Salemi, Director of Advancement, indicates the selection committee was, “beyond impressed by the diversity of talents in the classroom, their faithfulness, and the myriad of outside service initiatives for others.”

“Beyond being delighted to honor the legacy of a simply incredible woman whose times and efforts raised dollars that are exclusively dedicated as financial aid for families who choose Catholic education at St. John’s, I am beyond proud of these eight kids who emulate the qualities that Mary Kirwan embodies and brings to our St. John’s community.  This is what we set out to accomplish when that Kindergarten kid comes walking through our doors—and, to see this truly remarkable set of students is total affirmation of what we strive to achieve by their end-years at St. John’s.  Although the committee was thoroughly awed by all the stellar candidates, Aly Fuqua distinguished herself with her talents and deeds to be exceptionally worthy of the award.”  The scholarship award was presented by Rev. Michael Parker, Pastor, Mrs. Cynthia Jacobs, Principal, and Mary E. Kirwan to Aly during a celebratory Mass.

Congratulations are also extended to the other nominees:  Delores Bornholdt, Eliana DeGlopper, Victoria Franz, Ian Klenk, Kailea Logal, Santino Martone, and Anna Stang.

Plans are already underway for this year’s Scramble Golf Tournament and Scholarship Dinner to be held on Saturday, September 6th.  For reservations or more information, contact Michelle Salemi at 716-877-640.
