 May News and Highlights:

Social Studies

We are wrapping up our unit on Rome with the eventual decline of the Roman Empire.  Next on our

journey we will be learning about the Middle Ages where chivalry is not dead!  We will explore the workings

of Feudalism, including manor life, the roles of lords and ladies, serfs and vassals, and the role of knights.

We will learn about Charlemagne and the Crusades and understand why the Middle Ages are referred to as

the "Age of Faith", with the powerful role the Church and monasteries played in the lives of ordinary people.

Language Arts

We continue practicing our writing skills this month.  We continue our focus in grammar on verbs,

including transitive, intransitive, and the role of linking verbs.  In addition, the four principal parts of a verb

will be learned, as well as, the progressive and perfect tenses. We will be reviewing and practicing the five

steps of the writing process.

Spelling continues weekly, as well as, journal writing.

 Reading

We have finished reading the novel,  Tuck Everlasting.  The students thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful

story.  We will compare the novel with the video, which we will watch later this month. Their projects are due

May 16th and the students always look forward to sharing these creative works with the class.  We return to

our textbook series with another wonderful story,  Summer of the Swanswhich involves a specials needs child

afflicted with autism.

The last two book reports are due April 30th and May 31st.

Journal

Journal writing is continuing with a weekly written assignment ( 1 and 1/2  page) in response to a journal

prompt.  It is assigned on Tuesdays and due on Fridays of the same week. I expect to see growth

and development in your child's ability to effectively communicate.  Effort is needed to produce

sixth-grade quality work.

Religion

Religion in 6th grade focuses on Old Testament studies, as well as the traditional seasons of the

church year, such as Advent and Lent. We begin by looking at where we see God in our world,

from nature to our friends, our family, and the Church. From there, we begin our exploration of

the great patriarchs and Biblical figures and how they came to be people of faith.
